49ers Fall Twice in Doubleheader
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (5-6) gave up eight unearned over two games as California (6-4) swept the doubleheader on Sunday, 7-4 and 3-1 and the series with 10 unearned runs for the weekend. Last year, LBSU gave up just 22 unearned runs all season. The 49ers have now lost five straight. A two-run double by Mike Van Winden after a dropped foul ball by catcher Chris Jones allowed the inning to continue. A leadoff single by Garrett Bussiere was followed two batters later by James Holder second-chance single to put two runners on with one out. A groundout recorded the second out, before Van Winden's run off of Cody Evans (0-2) brought two home to make it 3-1. Alex Trafton (1-0) pitched the final two innings for his first win. Jared Hughes left with a no-decision after 7.0 strong innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits, striking out seven and walking just one. Eric Dworkis countered with 7.0 innings of one-run, seven hit baseball, also leaving in a 1-1 tie. In the first game of the doubleheader Cal scored five unearned runs on four errors as the Golden Bears won 7-4 over the 49ers. The four errors was the most since April 28, 2002. Joe Todoroff (2-0) gave up two runs over 3.0 innings to pick up the win, yielding to Travis Talbott in the eighth who picked up his third save. Brenna Boesch had three hits for the Bears. Cal would break open a 3-3 tie over the final two innings with the go-ahead run in the eighth and three more in the ninth. A potential pickoff in the eighth went awry as Allen Craig ended up scoring the go-ahead run, as a low throw by second baseman Chuck Sindlinger with no outs and runners on first and second, allowed Craig to be safe at third. Craig would score on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. Cal added three more runs (one earned) in the ninth to lead 7-3. A fielding error by reliever Brett Andrade opened the inning as RBI singles from Chris Errecart and James Holder made it 6-3. A sacrifice fly made it 7-3 after a passed ball moved pinch-runner Taylor Grigsby to third. The game was delayed aproximately a half hour prior to the top of the fifth. Cal starter Brandon Morrow left after the delay, giving up one run on three hits over 4.0 innings. Marco Estarda (1-1) countered with 5.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits, walking four and striking out three. Cal scored an unearned run in the third when leftfielder Jamie Huizar allowed the inning to continue with a missed fly ball, before Allen Craig hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Cal went up 2-0 in the second off an RBI single from Matt Einspahr. Two doubles in the sixth, the second by Boesch off of reliever Steve Hammond made it 3-0. The Beach rallied to tie it at 3-3 in the seventh when Brandon Godfrey's two-run single plated Jose Hernandez and Chuck Sindlinger. Both got on base via one-out singles. An RBI single from Hernandez in the second cut the Cal lead to 2-1. Third baseman Danny Mocny left the game in the top of the fourth after diving for a ball at third (left shoulder). His status is day-to-day. The 49ers return to Blair Field next weekend when they host San Diego State beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
