49ers Upset No. 20-ranked Cal Poly 4-2
LONG BEACH, CA-- Dana Farquhar (Redlands) scored two goals and unranked Long Beach State (9-3-1, 2-1-0 Big West) went on the offensive in the second half, coming back to defeat visiting No. 20-ranked Cal Poly (8-2-3, 0-1-0 Big West) 4-2 on Friday afternoon. Cal Poly, the three-time defending Big West Champion, were picked in the pre-season to repeat as conference champions. LBSU, who managed just one first half shot, a goal by Farquhar, tallied seven second half shots, as they scored three unanswered goals to defeat only the second ranked team in school history. Kim Silos (Ontario), who had a goal and two assists, tied the game in the 53rd minute, winning a ball from a Cal Poly defender and beating goalkeeper Liz Hill to tie it at 2-2. Sara Baca (Ventura) then dribbled it up the right side in the 61st minute and found an open Sahar Haghdan (Palmdale) in front of the net to give LBSU a 3-2 advantage. In the 77th minute Hayley Bolt's (Lakewood) header at midfield to an advancing Silos set up Farqhar's final goal from 10 yards out. Cal Poly controlled the game for much of the first half, following Silos' cross to Farquhar in the fourth minute. The Mustangs tied it the fifth minute of a rocket by Sharon Day, before going up 2-1 on Kelsey Carroll's fifth goal of the season at 29:08. The Mustangs outshot LBSU 5-to-1 in the half, and 10-to-8 for the contest. The win ties the modern day record for wins, set in 2003 when the team went 9-9-0. The 49ers, 6-0-0 at home, continue its four-game home stand with UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 1 p.m.
