Nothing But a Playoff Berth
RIVERSIDE, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer (12-4-2, 3-2-1 Big West), despite peppering the goal with nine shots on goal, secured its ever Big West Tournament berth, with a 0-0 double overtime tie with host UC Riverside (10-3-4, 4-0-3 Big West). The 49ers continue to add to their school-record for shutouts, posting their 10th of the season. Tawny Poggio made nine saves in net for the Highlanders, as The Beach allowed just one shot over the final 25 minutes of regulation. Meanwhile, LBSU took five shots, including two Kim Silos (Ontario) shots that were caught by Poggio in the 67th and 86th minutes. Dana Farquhar (Redlands) had her own chance in the 60th minute, but that 25-yard tally was also caught to preserve the tie. Each team took two overtime shots, as UCR edged the 49ers 13-to-12 in shots. Forty-Niner goalkeeper Liz Ramos (Bakersfield) had her own stellar game in net, making five saves, while the LBSU defense led defenders Jenna Duncan (Long Beach) and Julie Megorden (Los Alamitos), also made big plays all day long. Ramos caught key shots in the 56th and 65th minutes, and knocked away two more in the 50th and 41st minutes. The 49ers close out the regular season against CS Fullerton, at home, at 1 p.m., as the Highlanders, Titans and 49ers have all secured playoff berths. CSF and UCR can both win the conference, as a tie today by LBSU eliminated them from the conference title. |
