Gauchos Win Series Finale, 4-1 Senior Day For Six 49ers
May 8, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- UC Santa Barbara scored three runs in the second inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to come away with a 4-1 win over Long Beach State (45-11, 15-3 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at the 49er Softball Complex. Jennifer Davis (14-14) went the distance for UCSB (30-28, 12-6 Big West), allowing one unearned run and six hits.
UCSB jumped on 49er starter Marcel Torres (13-3) with three runs in the second inning. Heather Nobbe led off with a single to left. After moving to second on a sacrafice, Brittany Putich singled to center, moving Nobbe to third. Putich advanced to second when centerfielder Lauren Johnson's throw sailed wide of third base. Jessica Hejna then singled to center, scoring both Nobbe and Putich. Hejna would come around and score later in the inning on a 49er error.
Long Beach left 12 runners on base in the game and left the bases loaded in the first, fifth and seventh innings. The 49ers lone run came in the seventh after two were out. Arleigh Thorp singled, Jamie Farnworth reached on an error and Lindsey Knoff walked to load the bases. Kourtnee Gervasi then reached on an infield single, scoring Thorp. Davis was able to end the 49er threat by striking out Roxanne Staniorski. Thorp had two hits of the 49ers six hits on the afternoon.
Long Beach State will close out its regular season with a three-game set at second place Cal State Northridge next Friday and Saturday.
