LBSU Stays Alive 49ers Top Louisville, 3-2 in NCAA Regional
May 21, 2004 LOS ANGELES, CA -- The Long Beach State softball team avoided post-season elimination for the second straight night, in a 3-2 win over the Louisville Cardinals at the 2004 NCAA Regionals at Easton Stadium on Friday night.
LBSU will now await the winner of the Mississippi Valley State / Cornell game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Long Beach State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. After Tiffanie Wedell grounded out to first base, Colleen Burdick then was issued a walk, followed by a Lauren Johnson bunt single, allowing Burdick to reach all the way to third base. Arleigh Thorp then hit a single to left field to plate Burdick and give The Beach a 1-0 lead. Jamie Farnworth then drove a double into right field to score both Johnson and Thorp to lift LBSU to a 3-0 lead.
Louisville responded quickly in the top of the sixth inning with two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Meredith Cervenka came in for relief for LBS U starting pitcher, Lindsey Knoff after the Cardinals cut the lead to 3-1. After a sacrifice fly, Cervenka got the pitcher, Sherman, to fly out and end the inning. Cervenka then retired the next three U of L batters in the top of the seventh to preserve the save.
Knoff (17-3) was solid in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits and four strikeouts. Her 57 wins now tie her for 4th all-time at The Beach (Sandy Winchester). Farnworth finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Burdick, Johnson, and Thorp all scored runs. Johnson has 40 runs on the season, a new single season school record.
Long Beach State reached its 50th win of the season, the most victories for a single season in program history. Box Score
