49ers Fall to BYU

BYU Wins MPSF Championship PROVO, UT – The No. 1-ranked BYU Cougars defeated the No. 2-ranked Long Beach State 49ers, 3-1, in the MPSF Conference Championship in the Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday night in front of 3,175 fans. Game scores were 27-30, 32-30, 30-28, 30-24. Long Beach State dropped to 27-6, while BYU improved to 27-4. The Cougars capture the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship in Hawaii, May 6-8. Long Beach State will in all likelihood capture the "At Large" bid for the championship as the No. 2 seed. In other tournament action, Penn State captured the EIVA championship, and Lewis won the MIVA championship. Both will advance to Hawaii next week to complete the four teams. Jeff Wootton paced The Beach with 17 kills, while Scott Touzinsky, Duncan Budinger, and Robert Tarr all collected 14 kills each. Tyler Hildebrand netted 60 assists and two aces.
