LBSU Advances to MPSF Finals PROVO, UT – The No. 2-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team defeated the No. 3-ranked UCLA Bruins 3-0 in the MPSF semifinal match at the Smith Fieldhouse Thursday night. Game scores were 30-25, 30-27, 30-28. Long Beach State improved to 27-5, while UCLA ended its season at 24-6. Long Beach State now advances to face No. 1-ranked BYU, who needed five sets to defeat No. 4-ranked Pepperdine, 3-2 in the earlier semifinal. Scott Touzinsky paced The Beach with 14 kills, while adding seven digs. Jeff Wootton and David Lee added 13 kills each, and Duncan Budinger rounded out the top 49er kill leaders with 11 kills. Tyler Hildebrand netted a match-high 49 assists and added four kills, nine digs, and three blocks. The AVCA National Player of the Week directed the 49er offense to a .464 attack percentage. LBSU out-blocked UCLA, 9.5-6.0, with Lee totaling six blocks for The Beach. The 49ers out-dug UCLA, 34-21. The .464 attack percentage vs. UCLA was the best hitting percentage for a conference tournament match in school history. Lee recorded the highest hitting percentage (min. 15 att.) in school history in a conference playoff match when he hit .750 (13-1-16) on the night. Led by Wootton's seven kills, Long Beach State defeated the Bruins in game one, 30-25. Hildebrand netted 13 assists, three kills, and directed the 49er offense to a .519 hitting percentage. Touzinsky chipped in with four kills, and Nate Hagstrom added three kills. The 49ers out-blocked UCLA, 4.0-1.0, and got two blocks each from Wootton and Lee. The 49ers took a 2-0 match lead after a 30-27 game two victory. LBSU hit a blistering .515 clip in the frame (22-5-33). Lee heated up in the set with eight kills with no attack errors for a .889 hitting percentage. Touzinsky poured in six more kills, while Hildebrand registered 18 assists. LBSU reached match-point at 29-27 after a Touzinsky kill, and finished off the Bruins 30-28 after a UCLA service error in game three. The 49ers face BYU for the MPSF crown on Saturday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. (PDT). The match will be televised live on CSTV. |
