49ers Take Series over CS Fullerton with 3-0 Win LBSU Now 40-10, 10-2 BWC
DATE Story Courtesy of CSUF Media Relations FULLERTON, CA -- Long Beach State's Marcel Torres scattered just two hits and struck out five while also driving in a run as the No. 20 49ers shutout Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex.
Cal State Fullerton fell to 15-28 overall, 4-8 in the Big West. Long Beach State improved to 40-10 overall, 10-2 in league play. It is the first time since 1997 that LBSU has won 40 or more games in a season.
Long Beach State broke the scoreless tie in the first as Colleen Burdick led off with a double and scored on a throwing error on the ensuing sacrifice attempt. Jamie Farnworth then drove home the second run later in the inning with a one-out single back up the middle for the 2-0 lead.
Brooke Weekley (11-14) then settled down, stranding the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings and runners in scoring position in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. The 49ers left 11 runners on base for the game.
However, those efforts were equally matched by Long Beach State starter Marcel Torres (12-2), who allowed just two hits and retired 14 of the final 16 batters she faced, including eight in a row at one point, in claiming the victory.
The 49ers added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice by Torres.
Long Beach State returns to action at home vs. Pacific for a three-game series at the 49er softball complex May 1-2. Box Score |
