49ers Rebound With 2 Wins Over Cal Poly Pitching Dominant in Pair of Victories
April 18, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA -- The No. 20-ranked Long Beach State softball team rebounded after its 17-inning loss to Cal Poly on Saturday, with a pair of shutout victories over the Mustangs on Sunday at the 49er Softball Complex. Game scores were 2-0 and 1-0.
Jamie Farnworth's two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning in game one proved to be enough for Lindsey Knoff and the 49ers. Farnworth's blast over the left field wall, her fifth of the season, plated Arleigh Thorp, who reached base on an error by the center fielder, Amy Jo Nazarenus.
That was all starting pitcher Lindsey Knoff needed as she scattered just four hits while striking out five Mustang batters. Knoff improved her overall record to 11-3 on the season. Farnworth finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. The Mustangs committed three fielding errors.
Another tight battle dictated the play in the second game of the double-header, as Long Beach State prevailed, 1-0. LBSU unlocked a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning after a Colleen Burdick single plated Cassie Preece for the lead. Preece pinch ran for Melanie McCauley, who reached base on a walk issued by Cal Poly pitcher, Emily Hively. Preece would advance to second base after a Kourtnee Gervasi sacrifice bunt, and to third base after a Tiffanie Wedell sacrifice bunt.
Marcel Torres picked up the victory, her 11th of the season to improve to 11-2. Torres ranks No. 1 in the Big West Conference with a 0.90 ERA. Hively suffered the loss, allowing run one on three hits.
The 49er pitching staff has allowed just two runs in 70.0 innings of conference play this season (nine conference games).
Long Beach State (38-9, 8-1 Big West) travels to CS Fullerton for a three game series next weekend.
