49ers Crush Utah State, 16-0 No. 22-Ranked LBSU Sweeps Aggies; Improves to 36-8
April 10, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA -- The No. 22-ranked (NFCA) Long Beach State softball team cruised to a 16-0 conference win over the Utah State Aggies in the final game of the three-game series at the 49er Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. The game was called after the fifth inning.
The 16-0 victory marked the third time this season that LBSU has scored 10 or more runs in a game. The 16-0 win was also the second largest shutout margin victory in program history.
Long Beach State jumped on USU starting pitcher, Leslie Higley for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Colleen Burdick led off with a double, followed by a Lauren Johnson sacrifice bunt to advance Burdick to third base, Arleigh Thorp then connected for a double to plate both Burdick and Johnson for the quick 2-0 lead. Burdick eventually got to bat once more in the inning, and notched a double to score Kourtnee Gervasi (single) and Melanie McCauley (Fielder's Choice).
The 49ers added nine more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Burdick recorded two more RBI in the inning after her single plated Gervasi and McCauley. Jamie Farnworth also notched two RBI in the inning after her single scored Johnson and Burdick.
Burdick finished the afternoon 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs. Thorp went 3-for-3 (two doubles) with three RBI and three runs scored, and Gervasi went 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs. In all, The Beach pounded out a season-best 16 hits on 27 At Bats with 13 RBI.
Meredith Cervenka collected the victory to improve her record to 16-3. Cervenka did not allow at hit and struck out four Aggies in 3.0 innings of work. Cervenka has allowed just one run in her last 56.0 innings pitched. Marcel Torres went 2.0 innings, and allowed just one hit.
Long Beach State (36-8, 6-0 Big West) faces Cal Poly next Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series at the 49er Complex. Box Score |
