LBSU Wins Two More on Friday Knoff Returns and Records 300th Career Strikeout
March 5, 2004 HONOLULU, HI -- The Long Beach State softball team defeated both College of Charleston, 4-1 and Hawai'i, 4-1 in the second day of the 4th Annual Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament on Friday afternoon. The 49ers improved to 14-4 on the season.
Lindsey Knoff returned from an ankle injury going 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits and six strikeouts versus C of C. In fact Knoff recorded her 300th career strikeout after her first K of the night.
Long Beach State rallied from a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Burdick started the comeback with a solo home run, her first of the season. Lauren Johnson, Arleigh Thorp, and Jamie Farnworth then kept the rally going with three straight singles. Marcel Torres then reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced to second base, allowing Johnson to score, followed by Thorp, who scored on a throwing error by the Charleston short stop. Farnworth eventually scored on a passed ball.
Knoff retired the next six Charleston batters to earn her first victory of the season. Burdick finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, LBSU topped host, Hawai'i, 4-1. Meredith Cervenka collected her seventh victory of the season to improve to 7-1 after 7.0 innings of work.
The 49ers generated the game's first run in the top of the second inning, after Farnworth led off with a single to left field. Torres then reached base on a fielder's choice, and reached safely due to a throwing error by the third baseman, which also allowed Farnworth to advance to second base. After a Roxanne Staniorski sacrifice bunt moved Farnworth to third base, Farnworth then scored on a throwing error by the catcher to score at home plate.
The Beach added two more runs in the top of the fifth, and one more in the top of the seventh. Farnworth finished the Hawai'i game 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI.Johnson went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
