49ers Outlast Pepperdine in Five Touzinsky Pours in 21 Kills
March 5, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 2-ranked (Volleyball Magazine / No. 4 AVCA) Long Beach State men's volleyball team outlasted the No. 5-ranked Pepperdine Waves, 3-2, in an MPSF battle in the Gold Mine on Friday night. Game scores were 27-30, 30-22, 30-27, 26-30 18-16.
Long Beach State improved to 15-4, 10-3 MPSF, while the Waves fell to 10-4, 6-4 MPSF.
Scott Touzinsky was one of five Long Beach State players to record in double-figures in kills, with 21. Yassir Sliti returned from an injury with 16 kills, while Jeff Wootton (14 kills), David Lee (13 kills), and Nate Hagstrom (10 kills, 12 digs) rounded out the top kill leaders for The Beach. It was Hagstrom's second double-double of the season. Tyler Hildebrand netted a match-high 70 assists, while pouring in three kills. Paul Munoz tallied 13 digs. Sean Rooney recorded a match-high 31 kills in the losing effort for Pepperdine, while teammate Fred Winters added 22.
As a team, the 49ers registered a .355 hitting percentage (82-28-152), and out-dug the Waves, 44-32. LBSU was out-blocked, however, 13.5-9.0. Pepperdine hit for a .361 clip (76-23-147).
Long Beach State rallied from a 12-9 deficit in game five with a 4-1 run to tie the score at 13-13, courtesy of a Lee and Hagstrom block. Pepperdine had match point at 14-13 after a Touzinsky service error, but the 49ers were able to counter with a Touzinsky kill to square the game at 14-14. LBSU reached match-point at 15-14 after a Wootton kill, but the Waves were able to counter with a Rooney kill. LBSU once again reached match point at 16-15, courtesy of a Lee kill, but were once again matched by another Rooney kill to tie the score at 16. A Touzinsky kill followed by a Winters attack error ended the match, 18-16.
The 49ers next return to action on Wednesday, March 10 at UC Irvine.
