49ers Sweep Dartmouth Meredith Cervenka Tosses No-Hitter In Opener
March 25, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- Junior Meredith Cervenka tossed a no-hitter in the opener and Colleen Burdick collected three hits in the nightcap as the Long Beach State women's softball team won its tenth and eleventh consecutive games in a doubleheader sweep on Thursday over Dartmouth College. The 49ers (29-7), who are ranked No. 25 in the nation, won the opener 1-0 in eight innings, and the nightcap, 9-1 in five innings. Dartmouth fell to 2-9 with the two losses.
In the opener, Cervenka and Danica Giugliano (0-4) were locked in a pitchers duel until the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Burdick reached base on a two-base error by Dartmouth centerfielder Adrienne Draper. Melanie McCauley sacrificed Burdick to third, who then scored when Kourtnee Gervasi singled up the middle on the first pitch to give The Beach a 1-0 victory. Cervenka struck out 13 batters in the game and walked three. Giugliano only allowed three hits, one each by Gervasi, Arleigh Thorp and Jamie Farnworth.
In the second game the 49ers jumped on Dartmouth starter Ashley Thorfinnson for four runs in the third inning. Burdick,w ho was 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored in game two, led off the inning with a triple to center. Lauren Johnson brought her home with a ground out. Back-to-back walks to Thorp and Farnworth put two runners on for Marcel Torres. Torres hit the ball sharply to third, but Erika owen booted the ball, allowing Thorp to score. Roxanne Staniorski singled to load the bases, before McCauley doubled to left center, bringing home two runs.
Lindsey Knoff (8-2) went four innings on the mound for the 49ers, allowing an unearned run and three hits. Melissa Backstrom pitched a one-two-three fifth inning. The 49ers added five more runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Farnworth and McCauley. Farnworth was 2-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while McCauley was 2-3 with three RBI. The Beach collected 10 hits in the nightcap.
The 49ers are off this weekend, but will next be in action on Tuesday, March 30 when they host San Jose State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm at the 49er Softball Complex.
