Farnworth, Torres Earn BWC Honors
LBSU 22-7 on the Season Thanks to Farnworth and Torres
March 18, 2004 IRVINE, CA -- Shortstop Jamie Farnworth and pitcher Marcel Torres of the Long Beach State softball team, were named as the Big West Conference Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively by the league office on Thursday.
Farnworth (Upland, CA) was the Big West Player of the Week after earning Most Outstanding Player honors in the 4th annual Kipa Aloha Tournament in Hawaii, played March 4-7. Farnworth posted a .566 average to lead the 49ers to a 7-0 record at the tournament. She had 10 hits in 18 at-bats with seven runs and seven RBI. She had at least one hit in each of the first six games and walked six times, giving her an on-base percentage of .667. In the tournament's opening game, Farnworth belted a three-run home run against Siena and finished the day 2-for-2 with five RBI in a 15-0 victory. She went 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI in a 4-1 win over host Hawai'i. This was her second Player of the Week award this season.
Torres (Diamond Bar, CA) was named the conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, after earning the Most Outstanding Pitcher honor at the Kipa Aloha Tournament in Hawaii (Mar. 4-7). She posted a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in wins over Southern Illinois, College of Charleston and Hawai'i. The right-hander tossed a one-hit shutout against the Salukis, then struck out a season-high nine in five innings against College of Charleston. Torres came back in the championship game against Hawai'i, fanning seven batters while allowing six hits and an unearned run in a 3-1 final. Torres lowered her season ERA to 0.77 and did not allow an extra base hit to her opponents. This was her second Pitcher of the Week award this season.
