49ers Defeat UC Santa Cruz In Three Robert Tarr and Nathan Hagstrom Lead Beach With 11 Kills
February 6, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA – Nathan Hagstrom and Robert Tarr both pounded down 11 kills to lead the #6-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team to a 30-22, 30-20, 30-22 victory Friday evening over UC Santa Cruz in The Pyramid. With the win the 49ers improve to 9-3 while UC Santa Cruz fell to 5-6. The 49ers hit a season-high .553 (60-8-94) for the evening, committing only eight hitting errors.
The Banana Slugs led 2-1 in each of the three games, only to see the 49ers rebound to win easily. In game one the 49ers broke open a 12-10 game with an 8-4 run to take command at 20-14. Duncan Bundiger had five of his nine kills in game one as The Beach had just two hitting errors while hitting .581 (20-2-31). Bundiger hit an impressive .818 (9-0-11) for the evening.
Clint Coe finished with seven kills and seven digs and newcomer Thiago Barbosa had seven kills and a .667 hitting percentage in his first action of the season. Setter Tyler Hildebrand had 30 assists in games one and two before giving way to Robert Kijewski in game three. Kijewski recorded 16 assists on the evening. Freshman Teddy Liles had a big night for the 49ers with a career-igh 10 kills and three blocks while hitting .600 (10-1-15). Redshirt freshman Kevin Cape also saw duty in the match, finishing with a career-best four kills and two block assists.
Game two saw the 49ers go on a 6-1 run to expand a 20-16 lead to 26-17 en route to a 30-20 victory. Tarr had six kills in the game and the 49ers hit .485. Game three was tied at 10-10 before the 49eres took control with an 8-4 run.
UC Santa Cruz hit .258 for the evening as Long Beach native Sam Fullerton had nine kills as did Dane Gilliam. Nick brockman added eight kills and a team-high five digs.
The 49ers will next be in action on Wednesday, February 11 when they resume Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a match at UCLA.
