Decathlon State Champion/All-American Headed to 49ers LONG BEACH, CA-- It was a "blue-chip" day for Long Beach State track and field as junior college decathlon champion Chris Richardson (Downey/Downey HS/Cerritos College) signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2006 season. "One of the drawing points for Chris was our coaching staff, especially for a multi-eventer," said Director Andy Sythe. "Coaches Dave Rodda (jumps/multi's), Todd Riech (javelin) and Yvonne Scott (sprints) have all made two Olympic teams and Greg Hodel and myself have developed All-Americans in the throws and pole vault. The complete package was there for Chris to be successful." In his first season of the decathlon, Richardson had a phenomenal first year, winning the regional and state junior college meets, prior to Junior USATF All-American accolades. It was his first year competing in the decathlon. "You don't find better leaders with the total package, than you do in Chris," said Track and Field Director Andy Sythe."Chris is a quality student-athlete who brings in big time abilities as a multi-eventer, both in our conference and nationally. Although he is new to the decathlon, he is a blue chip athlete that has the size, strength and speed to be amongst the best in the NCAA." This past May, Richardson took home two top-10 finishes as the state championships; a first place finish in the decathlon (6,632) and seventh place showing in the javelin (177'3"), before finishing fourth at the Junior National Championships in June (6,685). Richardson turned down USC, Cal Poly and schools back east, to come to Long Beach State.
