#2-Ranked Long Beach St. Handles Pacific, 3-0 Tarr Records Career-High Four Aces; Niners Improve to 6-1
January 22, 2004 Long Beach, CA – The No. 2-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team defeated the No. 15-ranked Pacific Tigers, 3-0, in an MPSF conference match Thursday evening in The Pyramid. Game scores were 30-28, 30-27, 30-18.
Long Beach State improved to 6-1 (2-0 MPSF), while Pacific fell to 1-6 (0-3 MPSF). Scott Touzinsky paced The Beach with 12 kills, seven blocks, and three aces. Touzinsky's three aces puts him at 131 for his career, one shy of tying Brent Hilliard's all-time mark of 132. David Lee added 10 kills (.667 attack percentage), two digs, and three blocks. Robert Tarr notched a career-high four aces, while adding seven kills and six digs. Jeff Wootton chipped in with nine kills, six digs, and three blocks. Tyler Hildebrand netted 44 assists and two kills. As a team, The Beach registered a .435 hitting percentage, its highest for a three-game set (48-8-92). Sean Rodgers and Nils Dauburs led Pacific with 12 kills each in the losing effort.
Long Beach State pulled out a 30-28 game one victory behind Lee and Yassir Sliti's five kills in the set. Touzinsky chipped in with four kills and one ace, while Hildebrand netted 18 assists. As a team, the 49ers connected for 20 kills on 35 swings (four errors) for a .457 hitting percentage. Dauburs helped keep the score close for Pacific with seven kills in the frame. The 49ers never trailed after the game was tied early at 7-7, and led by as much as four at 23-19.
The 49ers took a 2-0 match lead with a 30-27 game two victory. Lee kept his hot hand with three more kills and a .727 attack percentage. Sliti helped out the 49er blocking with three block assists. Sliti also added two kills, while Touzinsky added four kills. LBSU maintained a steady hitting percentage at .344 (14-3-32), while the Tigers committed eight attack errors for a .171 clip. Long Beach State held a 25-20 lead and ended the game with a Tarr ace.
The 49ers closed out Pacific in commanding fashion in game three, 30-18. Tarr highlighted the game with six straight points, including three straight aces. Touzinsky ended the match with his third ace. Long Beach State faces Stanford tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. in The Pyramid.
