Last Match: The Long Beach State men's volleyball team placed third in the 40th annual UCSB E-Bar Tournament, Jan. 9-10 after going 2-1, with wins over Stanford (3-2) and USC (3-0). Scott Touzinsky paced The Beach over the weekend compiling 71 kills, including 30 in a 3-2 loss to CS Northridge on Saturday (1/10). Touzinsky hit a remarkable .683 versus Stanford on Friday (1/9), recording 29 kills (1 error) on 41 swings. Touzinsky also tallied six aces in the tournament giving him 10 for the season and 126 for his career. He is six aces shy of tying Brent Hilliard's mark of 132 from 1990-1993. Robert Tarr celebrated his 20th birthday on Friday with 17 kills (.375 hitting percentage) and three aces in LBSU's 3-2 victory over Stanford.
Ace in the Hole: Senior Scott Touzinsky, as mentioned earlier, has compiled 10 aces this season, giving him 126 for his career. Touzinsky needs just 6 more aces to tie Brent Hilliard (132) for the all-time career mark in program history.
Touzinsky: 1,000 and Climbing: Last season, Scott Touzinsky became just the 12th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. Touzinsky collected 71 kills in the UCSB E-Bar Tournament last weekend (Jan. 9-10), including 29 versus Stanford (1/9) and 30 versus CS Northridge (1/10). His career-high for kills is 32. Touzinsky passed Matt Prosser (1,147 kills) and Geoff Cryst (1,167 kills) for No. 9 all-time on the 49er career kill chart with 1,168.
Wootton Records #800: Senior Jeff Wootton recorded his 800th career kill versus USC on Jan. 10 at the UCSB E-Bar Invite. Wootton needs just 200 more kills to become the 13th player in Long Beach State history to reach the 1,000 kill mark.
Birthday Boy: Sophomore Robert Tarr celebrated his 20th birthday with 17 kills and career-high three aces versus Stanford on Friday (1/9). Running the Offense: Last year's AVCA Newcomer of the Year and MPSF Freshman of the Year, Tyler Hildebrand has netted 201 assists this season and 1,794 for his career. His 1,794 assists are sixth all-time at Long Beach State since 1998. Hildebrand is 206 assists away from becoming the sixth player in school history (since 1998) to record 2,000 or more career assists. Hildebrand collected a double-double (65 assists, 10 digs) versus CS Northridge on 1/10. He compiled 68 assists, four digs, and a career-high 2 block solos versus Stanford on Jan. 9.
Lee Maintains .400 Hitting Percentage: Entering the 2004 season David Lee compiled a career attack percentage of .415, 4th highest all-time at Long Beach State. This season Lee has 28 kills (13 errors) on 59 total attempts for a .254 attack percentage. Currently Lee's career hitting percentage stands at .407 (6th highest in program history).
Lee Starts off Right/Notches Career Kill #700: Senior David Lee tied a career-high nine block assists versus La Verne on Tuesday night (1/6) and recorded a match-best eight kills in the 49er victory. His eight kills gave him 702 kills for his career. Currently, Lee has compiled 722 career kills.
Patrolling the Backrow: Junior Paul Munoz has recorded a team-best 36 digs (2.25 per game average), including back-to-back 12 dig performances versus Stanford (1/9) and CS Northridge on 1/10.
Long Beach State Establishes New (Modern) Record: In its season opening victory over La Verne on Tuesday night, LBSU cruised to a 30-9 game one victory. The nine points allowed by the 49ers were the fewest in any game in the 30-point rally scoring system in program history. In fact all nine points scored by La Verne came off Long Beach State miscues. So in the old side-out 15-point system, the 49ers would have taken game one 15-0.
Block Party: Long Beach State recorded 17.5 total team blocks versus La Verne on 1/6 (31 block assists, 2 block solos). David Lee registered nine block assists, while Scott Touzinsky had the two solo blocks to go along with five block assists.
49ers remain No. 6: Long Beach State (3-1) remained at the #6 slot in the latest Volleyball Magazine Poll released on Jan. 12. The AVCA Poll (coaches) will be released on Tuesday, Jan. 13. |
