CERVENKA TOSSES A NO-NO LBSU Pitchers Give up a Combined One Run in Two Victories
SANTA BARBARA, CA -- Sophomore Meredith Cervenka pitched a complete game, no-hitter, to help the Long Beach State softball team earn a 1-0 victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, Sunday at the Campus Diamond. It was the first no-hitter of her career, and 13th in the program's history.
Colleen Burdick would help Long Beach State would score the game's only run in the top of the first inning, with a lead-off walk. One batter later, Arleigh Thorp would double to center field to plate Burdick.
That would be all that Cervenka needed as she dominated the rest of the way, nearly throwing a perfect game, with just one walk issued. She retired 21 batters, including two strikeouts. Cervenka, the two-time Big West Pitcher of the Week, has given up just runs in her last 45.0 innings pitched, and has won nine straight decisions to improve her record to 11-8. Her ERA lowered to 1.33 as well.
In the second game of the double-header, Lindsey Knoff would shut down the Gaucho line-up with a complete game, with just one run allowed, in the 2-1 Beach victory. The 49ers would rally in the sixth inning to score both runs, when Thorp connected for her fifth home run of the season deep to center field, to score Lauren Johnson, who reached on a single, as well.
Thorp, who doubled in the first game, moved in a tie for second place with Carla Williams for most doubles in a single season with 15. Thorp is just three doubles away from breaking the school's single season record of 17 (Amanda Adams).
Knoff allowed just eight hits, and improved her record to 12-9. Since starting the season, 10-14, Long Beach State has gone 13-3 since then.
Long Beach State (23-17, 11-3 Big West) travels to Logan, UT, May 6-7 for the make-up games that were postponed in April. Box Score - Game 1 Box Score - Game 2
