HILDEBRAND NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR; AVCA NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR Lee, Touzinsky, Munoz Named All-MPSF
LONG BEACH, CA – Freshman setter Tyler Hildebrand, of the Long Beach State men's volleyball team was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Freshman of the Year and the AVCA Newcomer of the Year this off-season.
Hildebrand (Mesa, AZ) had a phenomenal first season with The Beach, averaging a conference and national best 15.17 assists per game. Hildebrand broke Chris Seiffert's freshman single-season record with 1,593 assists this year as well (Seiffert - 1,578). Hildebrand set a league-high 88 assists versus Pacific on April 3, and posted 80 or more assists twice, and 70 or more assists five times. Hildebrand also contributed 1.41 digs and 0.57 blocks per game as well. It is also the first time in school history that any player has won the Newcomer of the Year award.
Junior David Lee (Alpine, CA) earned All-MPSF Second Team honors after a solid season for LBSU. Lee registered a team and conference best .483 hitting percentage (340k-69e-561ta), while also posting a team-high 1.18 blocks per game. Lee's .483 hitting percentage was the second highest for a junior in the program's history. Lee moved up to fourth place all-time with a .414 hitting percentage, passing head coach Alan Knipe.
Junior Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, MO) received All-MPSF Third Team accolades after leading the team with 4.64 kills per game this season. Touzinsky became just the 12th player in school history to record 1,000 or more kills in a career, after posting a personal-high 32 kills versus Pacific on April 3. Touzinsky registered double-digits in kills in 29 of the 30 total matches, and posted a team-best six double-doubles. He also joined Brent Hilliard as the only other player in Long Beach State history to record 100 or more service aces, after he compiled 30 this season.
Sophomore Paul Munoz (Huntington Beach, CA) rounded out the list with an All-MPSF Honorable Mention. Munoz averaged 1.78 digs per game as the Libero, and tied a personal-best 20 digs versus CS Northridge on April 9. He posted double-digits in digs seven times.
