49ers Drop Two at Stanford Classic STANFORD, CA -- The Long Beach State softball team dropped a pair of games at the Stanford Softball Classic, losing 2-0 to No. 12-ranked Georgia, and 2-1 to No. 21-ranked Texas A&M, Saturday afternoon at the Smith Family Stadium. Long Beach State fell to 7-8 on the season.
LB State fell down, 2-0 after three innings to the Aggies in the latter game. Adrian Gregory tripled to lead off the second inning. Lindsay Park drove in Gregory after a fielder's choice, to make it 1-0. A Lindsay Wilhelmson single to left field drove in teammate Crystal Martin in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 2-0.
Long Beach State would try to rally in the top of the seventh, after Lauren Johnson led off with a double. A triple by Arleigh Thorp would score Johnson. However, freshman Riki Paredes would strike out to end the ball game.
Meredith Cervenka picked up the loss, giving up two runs off four hits, while striking out six in 6.0 innings.
The No. 12 Georgia softball team captured its 20th win of the season as the Bulldogs shutout Long Beach State 2-0 Saturday morning in the Stanford Classic at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.
Georgia (12-1) tallied five hits for two runs while its defense was errorless. The Long Beach State 49ers (7-7) managed just three hits (Lauren Johnson, Tiffanie Wedell, Riki Paredes) off Green and committed the sole error of the game.
Green (12-1) went the distance for the Bulldogs striking out 15 LBSU batters to tie the single-game Georgia pitching record.
Shannon McKeon led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and a hit by pitch. McKeon's two runs came in the bottom of the fourth when Kim Wendland reached after being hit by the 49ers pitch. One batter later, McKeon sent a shot over the fence that was just to the right of the left field foul pole.
The two runs would be all that Georgia would get, but it proved to be enough as Green struck out six of her last seven batters, including all three in the seventh, to get the win.
Lindsey Knoff collected the loss, giving up two runs off five hits, and striking out six in 6.0 innings.
