DIRTBAGS: THE MOVIE Long Beach State Program "Re-Lived" on the Big Screen LONG BEACH, CA--Whod a thought that 13 years later, the Dirtbags would be in a movie? Well Long Beach State Baseball has arrived on the big screen in the form of Beach alum Drew Johnsons film The Road Home. The film, produced by Affinity Films, in part re-creates the Dirtbags first season, 1989, and their 50-win season under Head Coach Dave Snow, with a twist.
According to the films website, www.theroadhome2003.com, the film is about the following:
The Road Home is the classic Americana love story. Growing up in Las Vegas, NV. Danny and Melissa meet at age eight but are destined to become life long friends whose souls are connected instantly. During their difficult and tragic teen years they cling to each other for love and security. Despite this, they are afraid to declare their love for each other, for fear that it could ruin the beautiful friendship they have.
Eventually their lives go down two different roads. Danny fills the void in his heart with his passion and love for Americas pastime. He quickly takes a down and out college baseball team to the top (that would be the Dirtbags) and is destined for the big leagues. While Melissa, whos filled with insecurities from her youth, takes her pure beauty and becomes a famous model, ignoring her true dream of becoming a poet.
Although they are apart their lives are forever connected. With metaphors from Baseball and American life, how these two soul mates get back home to fulfill the true desires of their hearts, plays out like a triumphant and glorious seven game world series. It is a story of imperishable hope, courage, faith, love and coming home. In the fall of 2002, Drew Johnson's film first hit the theatres. Here is a trailer from the film.
