Alvarez Pitches to Win in Game One; Six Errors for LBSU in Gm 2 March 3, 2002 BATON ROUGE, LA-- The No. 21-ranked 49ers (7-5) split a doubleheader with No. 7-ranked Louisiana State (9-4) Saturday, winning the first game 8-3, before falling in the nightcap 10-2. The game was rescheduled as a doubleheader after Friday's game was rained out. The finale will be played at 1 p.m. CST on Sunday. Nick Covarrubias and Nick Orlandos each went 4-for-8 in the two games, while Todd Jennings went 3-for-7. Jennings has now had a hit in every start this season. In the nightcap, LSU pounded out 12 hits and 10 runs to give lefthander Lane Mestepay (2-0) the win. The Tigers capitalized on six 49er errors in scoring six unearned runs. Daniel Eisentrager (3-1) struck out a career-best seven, but gave up nine runs, three earned on 10 hits. Mike Hofius had a solo homer to lead off the ninth inning. In game one, sophomore Abe Alvarez (3-0) pitched 6.1 strong innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five enroute to his third win of the season. The Beach scored four times over the final three innings to take a 8-3 win over LSU in the opener. Neil Jamison pitched the final 2.0 shutout innings for his first career save. Kevin Randel's solo homer in the third gave LBSU a 1-0 lead. After The Beach led 4-1, Paul McAnulty's bases loaded walk gave the 49ers a 5-1 lead. With LBSU up 6-3, four straight singles added two more runs to lead 8-3. The second game will be played Saturday night, with the finale played on Sunday afternoon, barring rain.
