Alvarez, Weaver Named Pre-Season All-Americans Beach Ranked 13th in Pre-Season Collegiate Baseball, No. 16 by Baseball America TUCSON, AZ/DURHAM, NC-- Long Beach State baseball was ranked No. 13 nationally in Collegiate Baseball's pre-season poll and No. 16 by Baseball America, as junior LHP Abe Alvarez (Fontana, CA) and sophomore RHP Jered Weaver (Simi Valley, CA) were named pre-season All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball. This year's home schedule features five teams ranked in the Collegiate Baseball's top-15, USC (No. 3), Louisiana State (No. 6), CS Fullerton (No. 7), Arizona State (No. 12) and Miami, FL (No. 14). Alvarez, the reigning Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year, was 12-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 2002, and was named a second team All-American by Baseball America. Alvarez was a member of Team USA in the summer of 2002. Weaver, who went 8-4 with a 4.37 ERA as a freshman, exceled in the summer up in Alaska, compiling a 5-1 record and 1.11 ERA in 65.2 innings, to earn third team pre-season All-America honors. Weaver ranked second in the league in strikeouts with 73 and third in ERA. Weaver was an honorable mention All-Freshman Team player by Collegiate Baseball.
