Following a successful season as the Interim Head Coach, Gertjan De Wilder named the program’s head coach in June of 2026.
After spending three seasons as an assistant coach, De Wilder took over the program as Interim Head Coach and guided a young Beach squad to a 14-11 overall record and a Big West Championship Semifinal appearance.
With De Wilder at the helm, the Beach earned multiple postseason honors during the 2025-26 campaign. Cecilia Costa garnered All-Big West First Team singles recognition after posting a team-best 21-12 overall record while competing primarily at the top of the lineup. Costa also earned Big West Player of the Week honors three times during the season and teamed with Paulina Franco Martinessi to secure All-Big West First Team doubles accolades after the pair compiled a 16-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark in conference play.
Pamela Badillo added All-Big West Honorable Mention singles honors after recording a 20-12 overall record and a 5-4 conference mark. The sophomore also opened the season with a championship performance at the Big West Fall Tournament, winning six consecutive singles matches to capture the 64-player main draw title. Thea Jagare also earned Big West Player of the Week recognition during the season, giving Long Beach State four conference weekly awards under De Wilder's leadership.
In his four seasons at the Beach, De Wilder has helped Long Beach State Women’s tennis record four straight Top 4 Big West regular season finishes and four consecutive double-digit win seasons.
Working with a young squad with seven true freshmen, De Wilder helped develop those players as Long Beach State returned to the ITA rankings, rising to as high as No. 53 in the nation while leading six players to All-Big West honors including Big West Freshman of the Year Cecilia Costa.
De Wilder is a former Division I, Division II, and junior college tennis athlete. He played collegiately for Eastern Illinois, Concordia, and Cypress College. De Wilder was the team captain with Eastern Illinois and a former NJCAA conference winner with Cypress College. During his tenure at Concordia, the Eagles were ranked No. 12 in the nation for Division II tennis.
De Wilder brings immense experience at the international level. A native of Belgium, De Wilder played at the Belgian Tennis Federation as a sparring partner for many tennis athletes. Additionally, De Wilder has gained experience coaching players in ITF tournaments.
After one year of competitive play with Concordia, De Wilder began his coaching career with both the men's and women's tennis teams as a full-time assistant coach while earning his master's degree in coaching and athletic administration. De Wilder continued to expand his education and has completed his second master's degree in coaching and exercise science.
