Steven Childs enters his fifth season with the Long Beach State track and field program in 2026, serving as a volunteer assistant coach working primarily with the jumps group.
Before joining The Beach, Childs gained valuable experience as a volunteer assistant at UC Davis during the 2020–21 season, working under Head Coach Ngoni Makusha, a seven-time NCAA champion in the long jump and sprints at Florida State.
Following his graduation from UC Davis, Childs broadened his coaching knowledge internationally, traveling to Japan to train alongside Olympic coach Hideshi Okamoto. While there, he participated in track and field camps focused on biomechanics and advanced training techniques.
As a student-athlete at UC Davis, Childs was a standout jumper and sprinter. A three-time NCAA West Preliminary Qualifier and four-time All-Big West honoree, he qualified for the 2018 NCAA postseason in both the long jump and triple jump. Over his career, he competed in 10 Big West Championship events, placing in the top 10 in eight of them, including two third-place finishes in 2018. Childs remains among the program’s all-time best, ranking second in school history in the long jump (25-5 ¼), tied for seventh in the triple jump (50-2 ½), and a member of the 4x100m relay squad that recorded the third-fastest time in program history (40.74).
Childs graduated from UC Davis with a degree in psychology.
