Long Beach State Men Place Second At Mark Covert Classic

Beach men finish five points behind Cal State Fullerton as women place seventh in season opener.
CORONA, Calif. -- Long Beach State opened the 2026 cross country season Saturday morning with a runner-up finish from the men and a seventh-place showing from the women at the Mark Covert Classic at Green River Golf Club.
The Beach placed three runners among the top seven of the men's 8K and finished with 59 points, just five behind team champion Cal State Fullerton. Long Beach State recorded a combined team time of 2:07:38 and an average of 25:32 among their five scoring runners.
Cameron Gill led the Beach across the finish line, placing third overall in 25:12.4. Miles Jones followed closely in fifth with a time of 25:16.6, while Cameron Rhone completed the team's top-seven trio by finishing seventh in 25:20.7.
Juan Flores was Long Beach State's fourth scorer, placing 21st in 25:37.0. Jonah Vasquez rounded out the scoring five in 36th with a time of 26:10.9, giving the Beach a scoring gap of 59 seconds.
Ethan Barok placed 54th in 26:45.3, and Brandon Day completed the men's lineup with an 86th-place time of 28:01.6.
The Long Beach State women finished seventh in the 6K with 167 points. The Beach combined for a team time of 1:51:21, an average of 22:17 and a scoring gap of 1:42.
Brooke Willoughby paced the women with a 25th-place finish, covering the course in 21:30.1. Darcy Ray crossed the line four places later in 29th at 21:40.7.
Kendall Bawden was the third Beach runner to finish, placing 41st in 22:02.6. Sharice Laygo recorded a time of 22:55.9 to finish 65th, while Elisa Rodriguez completed the scoring lineup in 69th at 23:11.2.
