Long Beach State Opens 2026 Season With Scoreless Draw Against Saint Mary’s

Schuck makes two saves as Beach opens 2026 campaign with clean sheet
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State opened the 2026 season with a 0-0 draw against Saint Mary's on Wednesday night at George Allen Field, as the Beach outshot the Gaels 10-7 and senior goalkeeper Aurora Schuck made two saves to record a clean sheet.
Long Beach State (0-0-1) generated seven of its 10 shots after halftime while holding Saint Mary's (0-0-1) without a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes. The Beach finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots, while both teams earned four corner kicks.
The Gaels produced the first shot on goal in the 15th minute when Brooklyn Smith forced a save from Schuck. Radisson Banks answered with an attempt wide right for Long Beach State in the 19th minute before Schuck was called on again, stopping Brooke Fairbanks in the 22nd.
Long Beach State created another opportunity in the opening half in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Ameera White put an attempt on frame, but Saint Mary's made the save to keep the match scoreless. The Beach earned a corner less than a minute later, its second of the half.
The teams went into halftime tied 0-0 with three shots apiece. Saint Mary's put two of its three attempts on target compared with one for Long Beach State, while the Beach held a 2-1 advantage in corners.
Long Beach State increased the pressure immediately after the break. Jordan Candelaria had a shot blocked in the 49th minute before Ruby Mansour had another attempt blocked in the 54th, leading to a Beach corner.
Kailey Supa sent a shot wide right in the 65th minute before Long Beach State produced another pair of chances in quick succession in the 75th. Emerson Obrist had the first attempt blocked, and Cassidy Drago followed four seconds later with another shot that was stopped by the Saint Mary's defense.
The Beach continued looking for the breakthrough late in the match. Banks had a shot blocked in the 84th minute, and Taylor Bellotti sent the final Long Beach State attempt wide right in the 85th.
Saint Mary's was unable to test Schuck after halftime, with its final four shots either blocked or off target. The Beach defense held the Gaels without a shot on goal after the 22nd minute as Schuck finished with two saves in her first shutout of the season.
Banks and Drago led Long Beach State with two shots each, while White recorded the Beach's lone shot on goal. Candelaria, Mansour, Supa, Obrist and Bellotti each added one attempt.
Schuck played all 90 minutes in goal, while Zoe Willis, Mansour and Cherrie Cox also went the distance.
The shutout was the 11th of Schuck's Long Beach State career after the senior recorded five clean sheets in each of the previous two seasons. The Beach also continued to lean on its veteran core in the season opener, with Cox, Banks, Candelaria, Willis and Kana Uchida all in the starting lineup.
