Senior scores game-winner as Beach records second straight shutout to open 2026
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Cherrie Cox scored the game's only goal in the 23rd minute while Aurora Schuck and the Long Beach State defense posted their second consecutive shutout as the Beach defeated Colgate 1-0 on Sunday at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State improved to 1-0-1 with the victory after opening the season with a scoreless draw against Saint Mary's. Cox's goal was the first of the season for the Beach, while Schuck made three saves to keep LBSU unscored upon through the first 180 minutes of the 2026 campaign.
The Beach controlled the majority of the opening half, outshooting Colgate 13-3 with six shots on goal while controlling possession.
Cox generated the first opportunity less than three minutes into the match, sending an attempt wide right. Cassidy Drago then forced the Colgate goalkeeper into a pair of early saves, putting shots on target in both the sixth and ninth minutes.
After Schuck made her first save of the afternoon in the 11th minute, Long Beach State continued to apply pressure. The Beach created a dangerous sequence following a corner in the 15th minute, with Radisson Banks, Jordan Candelaria and Ruby Mansour all having shots blocked before Cox sent an attempt high.
The breakthrough came at 22:22. Banks put a shot on goal that was saved, but Cox capitalized on the ensuing opportunity to put Long Beach State in front 1-0. The unassisted goal was Cox's first of the season and ultimately stood as the game-winner.
The Beach continued creating chances after taking the lead. Taylor Bellotti forced another save in the 37th minute before Banks put another attempt on target two minutes later. Emerson Obrist and Olivia Yu also added late attempts as the Beach took its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Beach carried its pressure into the opening minutes of the second half. Banks forced a save in the 48th minute before Mansour put another shot on target less than a minute later. Kailey Supa followed with an attempt wide right in the 52nd.
Colgate began to see more of the ball as the half progressed, but the Beach defense protected the one-goal advantage. Schuck made a save in the 68th minute before Banks put two more shots on goal in the 71st and 74th minutes as Long Beach State searched for an insurance goal.
The Raiders made a late push, but Schuck came up with her third save in the 85th minute before the Beach saw out the remaining time to secure the 1-0 victory.
Long Beach State finished with a 19-10 advantage in shots and put 10 attempts on target compared with three for Colgate. The Beach also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks and finished with 53 percent possession.
Banks led the attacking effort with six shots, putting five on goal. Cox finished with three shots and the game-winning goal, while Drago had two shots with both on target. Mansour added two attempts and one shot on goal, while Bellotti also put her lone attempt on frame.
Schuck played all 90 minutes and made three saves for her second shutout of the season and the 12th of her Long Beach State career. Through two matches this season, Schuck has stopped all five shots she has faced while the Beach has yet to concede a goal.
The victory also gave Cox her 24th career goal and sixth career game-winner as Long Beach State finished its opening week unbeaten at 1-0-1.
