LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State took an early lead and rallied a second time to take the first game of a road game at UC San Diego, defeating the Tritons 6-5 Friday evening.

The top of the order got Long Beach State (19-13, 7-3 Big West) rolling in the third against Kelly Howard. Lina Apodaca got the inning started with an infield single, and after a walk to Avery Weisbrook, an RBI hit from Priscilla Iniguez put the Beach on the board, with aggressive baserunning putting two runners in scoring position. That paid off with a sacrifice fly from Nina Sepulveda, and then the Beach really opened things up with a two-run home run from Audree Mendoza, the first of the season for the sophomore transfer.

UC San Diego (12-19, 2-8 Big West) answered straight back in the bottom half. Samantha Womack singled with one out, and after an error, two infield singles brought home an initial run in the inning with the bases loaded. The Beach picked up an out at home, but the bases remained loaded, and two straight hits from Marley Espiau and Lily Hermosillo plated three runs to even the score at 4-4.

Long Beach State rallied straight back. Iniguez opened the fifth inning with a single, and Sepulveda hit an RBI double to put the Beach back in front. Another double, this time from Brooklyn Lee, made the score 6-4 in favor of the Beach.

Gianna Ioja pulled UC San Diego within one with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, the only run allowed by Pricilla Ramirez in relief, who collected the win. Kate Barnett entered to close out the sixth, and wrapped up the save by working around a leadoff single from the Tritons in the bottom of the seventh.

The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader from UC San Diego. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+, with first pitch coming in the opening game at 1 p.m.
