Freshman right-hander Jason Gerfers earned consecutive Big West weekly honors Monday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State freshman right-hander Jason Gerfers was named The Big West Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the second consecutive week after another complete-game performance helped lead the Dirtbags to a 5-1 road win over Cal State Bakersfield.
The honor marks the second straight weekly award for the freshman and his second overall this season after also earning conference recognition on March 16 following his first complete game against University of Hawai?i, which clinched Long Beach State's first Big West series victory of 2026.
Gerfers became the first Dirtbag to win back-to-back Pitcher of the Week honors since 2022 and the first Long Beach State pitcher to earn at least two weekly awards in a season since Nico Zeglin collected the honor twice during the 2023 campaign.
Against Cal State Bakersfield, Gerfers allowed one run on four hits while striking out 12 and walking five over 135 pitches. He worked around a solo home run in the fourth inning after Long Beach State built an early four-run cushion in the third, then closed out the final five innings without allowing another run to secure his second win of the season. Gerfers finished the outing with eight flyouts and five groundouts.
The freshman has now thrown two complete games in his first seven collegiate appearances. Through 35.2 innings this season, Gerfers owns a 3.28 ERA with 34 strikeouts and has held opposing hitters to a .192 batting average.
His latest outing also marked the second complete game by a Long Beach State freshman in a single season since 2022, continuing a strong start to conference play for the Dirtbags' weekend rotation.
