Astrong finish saw the Beach claw back two goals in the final 11 minutes of play.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Finding themselves down 2-0 despite a nearly 60-40 possession advantage, Long Beach State kept pushing and broke through for two goals in the final 11 minutes to salvage a 2-2 tie with Sacramento State.
Long Beach State (6-2-5, 0-1-3 Big West) outshot the Hornets 22 to 12 and had 10 shots on target, but Sacramento State (4-3-5, 0-1-3 Big West) capitalized on their big breaks to take a lead.
Radisson Banks battled through a double team to earn the first 9 corners for Long Beach State in the contest, and an early chance for the Beach came with their second, where after a recycle the Beach found Kylie Perez, but Hayley Hartsburg came up with a big save, one of eight on the night.
Cherrie Cox came up with two more opportunities before the 30th minute, and then Banks earned a PK in the 31st minute. Hartsburg guessed the right way and saved the shot, another big moment for the Sacramento State keeper to keep the score level into halftime.
Opening the action in the second half, Banks ripped a shot just wide of the net in the 50th minute, but coming back the other direction, a shot from Julie Colchico was saved by Aurora Schuck but Mia Jackson was able to poke in the rebound to put the Hornets on top 1-0.
Upping their pressure, Long Beach State forced a quick trio of chances, as Cox turned a high pressure turnover into a shot, and then Banks and Kana Uchida forced Hartsburg into two more saves in consecutive minutes.
Earning just their second corner on a counter, Sacramento State stunned the Beach in the 78th minute, however, as the entry found Jaety Mandaquit for a header to put the Hornets in front 2-0.
The Beach refused to give up. On the ensuing restart, Nikki Velasco whipped in a cross that was scored by Natalie Arnold to quickly pull back the first. Minutes later, again working down the right side, Velasco picked up another assist, this time with a low cross that Ameera White chipped over Hartsburg to tie the game 2-2.
Long Beach State nearly had the winner in the 86th, as Cox and Banks worked a give and go to put Cox through, but Hartsburg was up for one more challenge to keep the game tied.
Long Beach State's Big West homestand continues next Saturday when the Beach hosts California Baptist at 7 p.m. at George Allen Field.
