SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo each had a pair of wins in qualifying singles to earn a spot in the main draw after the first day of the ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego.

The Beach had three winners in the opening round of qualifying singles. New transfer Elen Jantacova picked up a straight sets win over Cal State Fullerton's Dana Kunza, 6-4, 6-4. Seeded juniors Jagare and Badillo each handled their business as well, with Jagare defeating UC Irvine's Rachel Gee 6-1, 6-4, and Badillo advancing after losing a first set tiebreak 6-7, 6-1, 10-8.

In the following round, Jagare had a dominant win over Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako, 6-0, 6-1, and Badillo dropped Rona Rugara of UCLA 6-0, 6-4 to each hold their seed and advance to the main draw. Jantacova split her first two sets with Maily Huynh of UC Irvine, and fell in the 10-point tiebreaker to come up just short of the main draw.

In the Round of 64, Sonia Van San was a hard-luck loser in a thrilling match with a seeded opponent of her own, falling in two tiebreaks against Makeilah Nepomuceno of Hawai'i 7-6, 7-6. Olivia Allegre from UC San Deigo won against Makaila Cheng, and Susannah Su of UC Riverside was a winner against Daria Malaescu.

In doubles, all three pairs were knocked out the opening round. Van San had another battle, falling in doubles with Malaescu 8-7 against Odrobina/Veltri of Grand Canyon in a 9-7 tiebreaker. Badillo and Jagare fell to Aludo/Madis of Hawai'i and Kim/Li of UC Riverside eliminated Diana De Simone and Jantacova.

Jagare, Badillo and De Simone will all play in the Main Draw Round of 64 singles on Friday, and if winners, will continue on to the Round of 32 which will also be played on October 16 in the only action of the day for the Beach.
