LONG BEACH, Calif. – Former Long Beach State Men's Golf Ian Gilligan earned his PGA Tour card following a strong season on the Korn Ferry Tour, joining a short list of former Beach golfers to reach the highest level of professional golf.
Gilligan spent two seasons at Long Beach State to begin his collegiate career. He had a strong debut season, earning Big West Freshman of the Year honors and placing as the individual runner-up as a freshman at the Big West Championship.
He was even better as a sophomore, finishing the season as the Big West Player of the Year. Leading Long Beach State to the first of the program's current four straight Big West titles, Gilligan was the Individual Medalist at the Big West Championship and placed in the Top 10 nine times during the season, winning four tournaments in the season.
Gilligan's stroke average of 68.88 in 2022-23 was the lowest of the modern era for Long Beach State, and his 11-under par 61 at Ocean Corse Hokuala in Kauai is the program's low round in the modern era.
After transferring to Florida to close out his collegiate career, Gilligan finished 17th on the Korn Ferry Tour this past season, making 15 of 24 cuts and earning over $350,000 in prize money to earn his card.
Gilligan becomes the seventh player to have competed for Long Beach State in the PGA Tour, joining program legends like Mark O'Meara, Mike Miles, Paul Goydos, John Mallinger and the most recent tour newcomer, Kevin Roy. He is the second player who transferred away from Long Beach State to reach the PGA Tour, joining mainstay Xander Schauffele who joined San Diego State after also earning Big West Freshman of the Year at Long Beach State.
