The Beach also had five wins in eight singles matches on Thursday.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State got off to a great start, sending through not only their seeded doubles pair but a second one through to the quarterfinals as two teams got off to 2-0 starts at the Big West Fall Tournament.
Ceclia Costa and Elen Jantacova, seeded second, took care of business in doubles, defeating Shachf Lieberman and Raphaelle Leroux of UC Santa Barbara 8-6 before a breezy 8-2 win in the round of 16 against Martina Markov and Emilie Lugon of Cal State Fullerton. Meanwhile, Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo had a slight upset in convincing fashion over Cal Poly's Amy Leather and Candela Aparisi, the seventh seed, and moved past Stina Larsson and Dana Kunza of Cal State Fullerton to also reach the quarterfinals.
Both of Long Beach State's other doubles pairs were knocked out by top competition, with Makaila Cheng and Daria Malaescu falling to the third seeds, while Diana De Simone and Sonia Van San lost to the fourth seeded pair.
In singles, Badillo picked up another win to improve to a perfect 7-0 in the history of the event, defeating 11-seed Stina Larsson of Cal State Fullerton 7-5, 6-2. Long Beach State's trio of seeded singles players all also found success, as Costa, De Simone and Jagare were all untroubled in straight set wins.
Transfer Elen Jantacova picked up her first win at the Beach, dropping Leanna Roman of Cal State Fullerton 6-2, 6-4. Long Beach State's other transfer, Makaila Cheng, lost in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Sonya Goldberg of the hosts, UC San Diego.
Freshman Sonia Van San had a promising debut, pushing sixth-seed Mika Ikemora to three sets in a defeat, while third-seed Ekua Youri of UC Santa Barbara knocked out Daria Malaescu.
