Men’s Water Polo Defeats Chapman For Head Coach Gavin Arroyo’s 300th Career Win

9/6/2025 12:24:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

Gabi Acosta led the offense with five goals.

ORANGE, Calif. – After a slow start, Long Beach State pushed an 11-0 run to take control of Chapman and give Head Coach Gavin Arroyo his 300th career win after defeating the Panthers, 20-8.

Head Coach Gavin Arroyo reached the milestone of 300 career wins, which has only happened once before in program history as former head coach Ken Lindgren finished his 24-year coaching career at Long Beach State with 335 career wins. Arroyo is the fourth coach the program has had and is starting his 19th season leading the Beach, and the second to achieve such a milestone. Arroyo, a former Olympian for Team USA, has been named Coach of the Year on six different occasions, most recently winning Big West honors after leading the team to the championship last season.

Gabi Acosta got Long Beach State (6-2) on the board first before Chapman (0-3) tied the game quickly after. Back-to-back goals by Corbin Stanley gave the Beach a 3-1 lead. The Panthers cut the lead before Toring Stanley added one on a penalty shot, and Chapman added another to finish the first quarter with the Beach up, 4-3.

In the second period, the Beach held the Panthers scoreless while Botond Hajdu and Michael Soybel each added one goal.

Sandro Pueyo Caballero opened scoring for the Beach in the third period and extended the lead to 7-3. Both teams traded goals as Artur Diaz added one to the tally. LBSU went on a 4-0 run at the end of the third behind a hat trick by Acosta to lead 12-6 after three periods.

Long Beach State completed an 11-0 run after scoring seven unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. The Panthers added back-to-back goals, but a late strike by Itai Roth gave the Beach another win on the season, 20-8.

The Beach will host their first home games when they face No. 16 Harvard on Saturday at 10 a.m. on the LBCC campus.
