Hawai’i had no shots on target in the tie as Aurora Schuck recorded her second shutout of the year.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A comprehensive defensive effort saw Long Beach State almost entirely untroubled in the back, but the Beach couldn't find a breakthrough of their own in a 0-0 draw with Hawai'i to open Big West play.
Long Beach State (3-4-2, 0-0-1 Big West) had over 60% possession and 10 total shots to just four from Hawai'i (2-4-4, 0-0-1), but neither side found the net on the night. The Beach had a sterling defensive effort, blocking two of the four shots taken by Hawai'i, with the other two nowhere near Aurora Shuck, who recorded her second shutout of the season.
Radisson Banks had the first shot of the game, an effort that was saved in the 17th minute, and then the junior forward and Kana Uchida had two shots in succession just after the 30-minute mark, both of which were saved by Brianna Chirpich, who finished with six total saves on the night. Both shots in the first half from Hawai'i were blocked, highlighting the defensive effort overall in the first half.
Continuing to press forward, Uchida had another solid shot that was turned aside by Chirpich for a corner kick in the 54th minute, and then Kailey Supa had a header off that corner kick that was just over the crossbar in another solid chance.
Banks and Natelle El Mokbel forced Chirpich into two more saves in the final ten minutes, but the Rainbow Wahine held on as the first game of conference play for both teams ended in a tie.
Long Beach State will get a small break, returning to action on October 2 when they continue Big West play on the road at UC Riverside.
