Men’s Water Polo Starts Off Season With Two Wins On Day One Of The Triton Invite

Long Beach State scored 56 goals in the day to open the 2025 season.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – With two dominating wins, Long Beach State started their 2025 campaign. The Beach faced Occidental to start the Triton Invite with a 25-3 win. In the afternoon the Beach defeated La Verne, 31-8.
In the first match of the day, Long Beach State started off strong with an 8-0 first quarter. Sophomore Harper Stewart scored the first goal for the Beach in the season, before All-American Gabi Acosta added his first of the day. Marc Frigola got one on the board on a penalty shot before back-to-back goals from Toring Stanley and Artur Diaz to extend the Beach lead. Corbin Stanley added his first of the day to finish the quarter.
Building on the momentum of the first quarter, Frigola and Acosta extended the lead. Occidental got on the board after a penalty shot before freshman Zalán Nagy scored his first collegiate goal. C. Stanley added two other goals as senior Alec Johnson and sophomore Keegan Moore got on the board before halftime as the Beach led 15-1.
Back-to-back goals by senior Itai Roth extended the Beach lead early in the third. Botond Hajdu, Michael Soybel, Ash Keshvara and Caleb Francisco all added their first goals of the season to continue the lead for Long Beach State, 22-2 after three periods.
Three unanswered goals by the Beach secured the first win of the season. The Tigers scored late in the quarter on an extra man play, however LBSU controlled the last possession to finish with a 25-3 win. Sophomores Sergi Ramon and Joe Jenness split time in the cage, combining for nine saves and five steals.
The second game of the day saw the same story as the first. Stewart got the Beach quickly on the board as the team opened a 9-0 lead in the first. Moore added a hat trick in the first quarter to help the team.
Keshvara added his second of the day to open the second quarter as the Beach led 10-0. Two quick goals by La Verne shortened the lead for Long Beach State. Both teams traded goals before the Beach scored four unanswered goals courtesy of back-to-back goals by Diaz and Sandro Pueyo's first goal as a Beach player, to head into halftime up 17-4.
The Leopards scored first in the third but a beautiful spin by Hajdu opened the gap again for the Beach. Seven different players added goals in the quarter to extend the lead to a comfortable 28-7 after 24 minutes.
Sophomore Jovan Mandic scored his first two of the season early in the fourth and the Beach controlled the rest of the game to secure their second win of the season, 31-8. The 31 goals in the contest were the second-most scored in a single game in program history.
The Beach continues play at the Triton Invite this Saturday, facing No. 10 San Jose State at 9:20 a.m. and George Washington at 1:20 p.m.
