Reden Tops the Beach Men; Schwab Paces LBSU Women

MALIBU, Calif. — The Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2025 season Friday at Pepperdine's Waves Invitational at Alumni Park.
 
MEN
Long Beach State tallied 58 points, placing behind team champion UC Santa Barbara (40) and host Pepperdine (46).
 
Kyle Reden led LBSU with a seventh-place finish, clocking a career-best 6k time of 18:39.5. Cameron Rhone was close behind in eighth at 18:42.6. Miles Jones (12th, 18:48.6), Cameron Gill (13th, 18:49.3) and Cristian Martinez (18th, 19:02.4) rounded out the Beach's scoring five.
 
Max Ramirez placed 35th overall in 20:05.2, and Brandon Day rounded out the Beach lineup in 41st with a time of 20:39.8.
 
UC Santa Barbara's Zachary Parker won the individual title in 17:44.6.
 
WOMEN
The Beach placed second overall at the Waves Invitational, finishing with 55 points behind UC Santa Barbara's 32 in the season-opening 4k.
 
Marikay Schwab led the Beach with a fourth-place finish, clocking in at 13:43.8. Jadyn Palaschuk was close behind in eighth (14:02.7), while freshman Darcy Ray made her collegiate debut in ninth (14:06.4).
 
Brooke Willoughby (19th, 14:32.7) and freshman Sharice Laygo (21st, 14:37.6) rounded out LBSU's scoring five. Junior Alyssa Tapanes crossed in 30th (14:51.1) and senior Nataly Toledo added a 35th-place finish (15:00.5) to give the Beach depth in the pack.
 
Also competing for Long Beach State were Natasha King (49th, 15:51.3), Elisa Rodriguez (50th, 15:52.7), and Elena Windsor (62nd, 17:13.2).
 
UC Santa Barbara claimed the team title, placing five runners in the top 11, while Pepperdine's Elizabeth Crawford won the individual race in 13:09.1.
 
UP NEXT
Long Beach State returns to competition on Sept. 27 at the UC Riverside Invitational. Competition begins at 7:15 a.m.
