Men’s Basketball Drops Big West Home Opener Against UC San Diego 80-74

Gavin Sykes scored 20 points while Petar Majstorovic added 18 for Long Beach State.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State made another late push, but couldn't quite break through in an 80-74 loss to UC San Diego in the first home game of league play as part of Week 0 in the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
Freshman Gavin Sykes led Long Beach State with 20 points, while sophomore Petar Majstorovic added 18 as the underclassmen again led the Beach in scoring Saturday against UC San Diego (8-1, 1-0 Big West).
Long Beach State (2-8, 0-2 Big West) got off to a quick start, finding Majstorovic for an open three followed by a lob to Shay Johnson Jr. to get the Long Beach State crowd into the game early. Tied at 17-17, UC San Diego used a 7-0 run to open up a lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.
Fouled on a 3-point attempt, Sykes sank three free throws to cut the lead back to two, and the Beach trailed by just four points at the half, 34-30. Coming out of the break, Long Beach State again got off to a great start, starting the half on an 8-1 run to take a 38-35 lead on a wide-open Isaiah Lewis three following some great ball movement from the Beach, leading to a UC San Diego timeout.
Tied at 42, the key stretch of the contest came just after the 15-minute mark as UC San Diego exploded for an 11-0 run with five baskets in five possessions. The Beach was able to chip away, cutting the lead back to four in the closing seconds following a Majstorovic 3-pointer, but the comeback ran out of time as the Tritons sank their free throws to close out the game.
With the conclusion of Bold Week for the Big West, non-conference play resumes next week with one game for the Beach, who will play on the road at San Jose State on Tuesday, December 9.
