Long Beach State Falls In Another Tight Overtime Road Battle At San Jose State

12/9/2025 10:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Sykes, Majstorovic both had over 20 points but the Spartans pulled away in overtime at home.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – For the second straight road game, Long Beach State battled hard to force overtime, but San Jose State and Colby Garland pulled away from the free throw line in the extra five minutes to take an 89-83 win on Tuesday night.

Freshman Gavin Sykes had another big night, scoring 26 points for Long Beach State (2-9) while Petar Majstorovic added 21 with 8 rebounds as the underclassman duo again led the Beach in a tight battle with San Jose State (5-5) that featured 18 ties and 14 lead changes including two big swings.

The first came in the first half. Cole Farrell scored eight quick points to get the Beach started, and Long Beach State led by two points after a Christian Jones putback with just over 11 minutes to play, but the Spartans retook the lead at 28-26 and then went on a 7-0 run to open a nine-point lead, their largest of the game.

The Beach then battled back, as Sykes tied the game at 35-35 and the teams entered the locker rooms tied at 39.

In the second half, the roles were reversed as the Spartans pushed to a five-point lead with just over ten minutes to play at 61-56, but the Beach came roaring back. Taking the lead at that point on an 8-0 run capped by a Rob Diaz III layup, Long Beach State continued to play solid defense, and would eventually take a 77-68 lead with just under three minutes to play. The Spartans were able to rally, and forced overtime with a 9-0 run of their own to close out regulation.

Moving into overtime, Garland controlled the action, as the Spartan point guard went to the line eight times in the extra five minutes and sank all eight to carry the scoring. The Spartans made just two field goals in the overtime, but with the game tied at 83-83, Sadaraque NgaNga put San Jose State back on top and Garland finished things off with four made free throws in the final minute. Garland finished with 27 points for the Spartans.

For Long Beach State, the two players with 20+ marked the first time in over a calendar year for that achievement since Kam Martin and Devin Askew against San Diego last season.

Long Beach State will have a short break, returning to action on Thursday, December 18 when the Beach hosts Pepperdine at 7 p.m. in the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
