Long Beach State opened with energy and kept the game tight through three quarters before a fourth-quarter scoring drought allowed the Dons to pull away.

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State (0-5) Women's Basketball put together one of their strongest performances of the season on Thursday night, trading punches through three competitive quarters before a fourth quarter scoring drought proved costly in a 68-55 result against San Francisco (3-2) at the Gold Mine.

Brynna Pukis set the tone early for the Beach with a layup, jumper and a three that accounted for the team's first seven points. Judit Oliva Fernandez added six efficient points in the first quarter, helping Long Beach close the period down by just one.

JaQuoia Jones-Brown carried the offense through the second quarter. She scored 12 points in the frame and entered halftime with 13 points and 5 rebounds as the Beach continued to generate quality looks and second chance opportunities. At the break, Long Beach trailed 41-30 but remained within striking distance.

The Beach delivered its best basketball of the night coming out of halftime. Beach offense opened the third quarter with seven points in the first two minutes and forced multiple stops to cut the deficit to two. Kennan Ka scored six in the quarter, Pukis knocked down another three and Jones-Brown continued to attack the paint. The Beach outscored San Francisco 19-13 in the third frame.

Trailing just 54–49 entering the fourth, the Beach stayed close until a cold spell set in. LBSU shot just 1-for-9 from the floor in the final period and was held scoreless for more than five minutes while the Dons extended the margin into double digits. Ka ended the drought with a jumper in the final 30 seconds, but the comeback window had closed.

Jones-Brown finished with her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Pukis added 14 points and six boards. Ka contributed eight points while Oliva Fernandez added nine.

Long Beach State hits the road this weekend to challenge Oregon State on Sunday, November 23. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
