Women’s Volleyball Rolls To 3-0 Sweep At UC San Diego

Long Beach State hit .420 and had three players with double-figure kills in a sweep on the road at UC San Diego.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Sophomore Madi Maxwell guided a masterful team effort, as the setter had three kills and 35 assists while leading a balanced attack to .420 hitting on the road in a 25-21, 25-17, 25-11 sweep of UC San Diego.
Rhiann Sheffie had 11 kills on .529 hitting, Logan King also finished with 11 kills while hitting .409, and Elise Agi had 10 kills on .529 hitting as the Beach offense was nearly unstoppable on Tuesday.
Long Beach State (20-8, 13-4 Big West) trailed early but rallied quickly, turning a 4-3 deficit to UC San Diego (6-23, 4-13 Big West) into a lead after a Sidney Hamaker kill, a block from Maxwell and Sheffie, and an ace from Hamaker. UC San Diego was able to cut into the edge, pulling to within one first at 17-16 and then again on an Ireland McNees ace at 21-20, but a sideout following a Natalie Reagan timeout helped settle things for the Beach in a 25-21 opening set win.
With the momentum from closing out the first, Long Beach State took control in the second set, holding the Tritons to just five kills in total in the set. Tied at 9-9, Long Beach State pushed to an 11-9 lead, and then, with Agi behind the endline, the Beach went on a big run. Scoring six straight with a pair of kills from King and capped by an ace from Agi, Long Beach State took a 17-10 lead and cruised to a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third, UC San Diego held to within one at 8-7, but a seven-point run for Long Beach State opened up a 15-7 lead. Ultimately, Long Beach State hit .522 in the set, not making a single attack error on the way to a 25-11 win and remaining unbeaten all-time against UC San Diego.
Long Beach State remains on the road to close out the regular season, facing Hawai'i on the road on Saturday at 9 p.m. PT with live coverage on ESPN+.
