
Beach Stuns UC Davis On Senior Night In Four-Set Win

King had 16 kills, Hamaker 14 as the Beach defeated UC Davis.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – On Senior Night, Long Beach State Women's Volleyball got a lift from their freshmen for a major win, defeating top of the standings UC Davis 25-19, 25-15, 14-25, 25-23.
Logan King led Long Beach State (19-8, 12-4 Big West) with 16 kills, while Sidney Hamaker added 14 kills on .423 hitting as the two youngsters for the Beach led the way in the Gold Mine.
The Beach got off to a great start in set one. A block from Rhiann Sheffie and Madi Maxwell followed by a Hamaker ace put the Beach on top 4-3. A pair of kills from Elise Agi pushed the lead to 14-10, and the run continued with a Maxwell overpass to put the Beach on top 16-10. Up 20-13, Long Beach State went on to close out the set 25-19 on a UC Davis (17-6, 13-2 Big West) service error, one of four in the set, along with four blocks for the Beach that complemented .286 hitting in the first.
The second set featured more of the same as the Beach increased their hitting to .406. An early UC Davis error helped the Beach take an early 6-4 lead, and then Maxwell found King for two quick kills to push to 9-6. Sheffie added to the edge at 12-8, and then Maxwell called her own number on three for a 17-12 lead. With the momentum firmly behind the Beach, LBSU closed out the set 25-15.
Befitting the league leaders, UC Davis rallied and forced a reversal of momentum in the third. The Aggies roared out to a 6-2 lead, ultimately pushing out in front 10-3. UC Davis hit .478 in the third, making just one error on the way to a 25-14 win to extend the match.
In the fourth, it was Agi and the Beach that took the early momentum, scoring two points on serve from the senior to begin the set. With another senior taking their turn behind the end line, Tatum Hoff put the Beach on top 8-5.
The set continued to be tight, however, as UC Davis rallied for a 9-8 lead before Hamaker put the Beach back in front 12-11. The Aggies took one last lead at 19-18, but the Beach rallied behind Hamaker to regain the service edge at 23-22. A UC Davis service error, one of 15 on the night for the Aggies, set up set point for the Beach and then a Maxwell and Sheffie block closed out a 25-23 win on Senior Night for Long Beach State.
Following the match, Long Beach State honored their four seniors in Elise Agi, Rhiann Sheffie, Nieko Thomas and Tatum Hoff.
Long Beach State finishes the season on the road, facing UC San Diego on Tuesday before traveling to Honolulu to play the Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
The Beach then will play host to the Big West Championship over Thanksgiving week inside the Walter Pyramid. The Beach is currently a half-game behind Cal Poly and tied with UC Santa Barbara as the three battle for a crucial first-round bye in the upcoming tournament.
