Beach Surges Past UC Riverside for Ninth Straight Win, Stays Unbeaten in Big West Play

Long Beach State hits .308 and in straight-set sweep of Highlanders
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Long Beach State stayed perfect in Big West play with a straight-set sweep of UC Riverside on Thursday night at SRC Arena. The Beach (12-4, 5-0 Big West) hit .308 as a team and held the Highlanders (5-10, 1-4) to a .143 clip to secure their ninth consecutive victory.
Junior outside hitter Elise Agi led all players with 13 kills, hitting .440 while adding nine digs. Logan King followed with 11 kills, eight digs, and five total blocks, while Sidney Hamaker contributed nine kills, two blocks, and a .273 hitting percentage. Setter Madi Maxwell ran the offense with 31 assists, added 10 digs, and was part of three blocks in another steady two-way performance.
Long Beach State set the tone from the opening serve, jumping out to a 4–0 lead thanks to a kill from King and back-to-back attack errors by UC Riverside's hitters. The Beach's block, anchored by Hamaker and Nieko Thomas, forced three early miscues from the Highlanders, prompting a UC Riverside timeout.
The Highlanders responded with a small 4–1 run, capped by a pair of kills from McKynzee Beddes, to pull within 5–4, but the Beach defense quickly reasserted itself. King and Hamaker took over at the net, combining for several key swings during a 6–2 Long Beach spurt that extended the lead to 12–8.
UC Riverside briefly tied the set at 14–14 after a kill from Sophia Ewalefo and a Long Beach attack error, but the Beach answered decisively. Following a successful challenge reversal, King ignited a 6–0 run that included three consecutive kills and a service ace from Anna Jelinek, forcing another UC Riverside timeout with the Beach up 18–14.
From there, Long Beach State closed the set with relentless pressure. Agi and Thomas each delivered late kills, while Hamaker sealed the frame with a cross court strike from Maxwell to clinch the opener 25–17. The Beach hit .312 in the set with 14 kills against just four errors, while holding the Highlanders to .081.
The second set proved to be the most competitive of the night. UC Riverside jumped out to a 6–2 lead, fueled by Mia Delahoussaye, who notched four of her team-high 11 kills early on. The Highlanders capitalized on Beach attack errors and led by as many as five at 11–6. After a timeout, Long Beach regained its rhythm as King and Agi sparked a rally with back-to-back kills. The Beach tied the set at 13–13 after a Hamaker kill, and the teams traded points deep into the frame.
UC Riverside reclaimed a 19–18 advantage before Long Beach turned the tide behind a crucial block by Rhiann Sheffie and King, followed by consecutive kills from Agi and Hamaker. The Beach closed the set on a 7–4 run, capped by Hamaker's kill for a 25–23 win.
In the third, Long Beach State delivered its most efficient performance of the night, hitting .351 while holding UC Riverside to .029. The Beach stormed out to a 7–3 lead behind kills from Hamaker, King, and Thomas, and extended the advantage to 14–6 after a King ace and a series of Highlander errors.
Agi and Hamaker continued to dominate offensively, combining for eight kills in the final frame, while the Beach defense was relentless at the net. The Beach tallied four team blocks in the set and forced six Highlander attack errors. UC Riverside managed a brief rally to close within 21–13, but Agi's kill, followed by another from Thomas, pushed the lead out of reach. A final Agi swing down the line secured the 25–14 win and completed the sweep.
UC Riverside's Andrea Brewer added seven kills and two blocks, while setter Makena Tong had 20 assists and libero Jessica Dean notched 14 digs.
