Aggies snap Beach’s nine-match winning streak despite King’s double-double
DAVIS, Calif. — In a showdown between the Big West Conference's final two unbeaten women's volleyball teams, UC Davis defeated Long Beach State 3–1 on Saturday afternoon at the University Credit Union Center.
The Aggies took the opening set 25–20 behind a balanced attack and strong blocking. The teams traded points early with 10 ties before UC Davis broke free late. The Beach led 15–14 before the Aggies strung together a 6–1 run sparked by Breeze Czapinski and Allie Caldwell, whose back-to-back blocks fueled the surge. A kill by Brooke Hibino closed out the set as UC Davis hit .286 while holding Long Beach State to .179.
Set two mirrored the opener, featuring nine ties and five lead changes before UC Davis again pulled away late for a 25–19 win. The teams were even at 10–10 after a Long Beach State block by Elise Agi and Nieko Thomas, but the Aggies took control with a 6–1 burst led by Jade Light and Hibino, who combined for five kills during the stretch. UC Davis' defense stiffened, recording three blocks and forcing four Beach errors to extend the lead to 20–13. The Beach closed within 23–19 on kills by Rhiann Sheffie and Madi Maxwell, but Light's cross-court kill and another from Hibino sealed a 2–0 match advantage.
Facing a sweep, Long Beach State responded with a 25–21 victory in the third set. The teams traded points early before the Beach took the lead for good behind a strong service run. Three straight UC Davis attack errors and kills from Agi and Thomas put Long Beach State ahead 10–8. The Beach extended the margin to 15–9 after consecutive blocks by Thomas and Maxwell, forcing both Aggie timeouts. UC Davis closed within three at 21–18 behind late kills from Czapinski and Light, but Maxwell's solo block set up set point. The Aggies won the next rally before a service error ended the frame and extended the match.

Ximena Cordero Barr closed out the match with a service ace that clipped the back line.
The contest featured 36 ties and 18 lead changes across four sets. King recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and a season-high 15 digs. Sheffie added 10 kills on .348 hitting, while Agi also finished with 10 kills. UC Davis (10–4, 6–0 Big West), which snapped Long Beach State's nine-match winning streak, was led by Czapinski with 17 kills and a .424 hitting percentage (17–3–33). Light tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Hibino added 13 kills.
