A penalty save by Aurora Shuck in the 79th minute sealed the draw.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A penalty save in the 79th minute by Aurora Schuck capped an exciting 1-1 draw in the Black and Blue Rivalry after a pair of first half goals saw Long Beach State and UC Irvine share the honors on Sunday evening.
Long Beach State (4-4-3, 1-0-2) got on the board first after both teams settled in through the first 15 minutes. Cherrie Cox, making her return to the lineup, forced a corner after a 21st minute shot. The entry on the corner from Ameera White found Julie Lopez, whose effort was redirected by Jordan Candelaria into goal for the lead and the second goal of the season for the junior.
The Beach scored the first goal of the game on their first shot, but UC Irvine (6-3-5, 3-1-1 Big West) did the same. Mia Colombini finished off a great strike from the edge of the box to even the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute.
That margin would hold for the rest of the half, with Long Beach State outshooting the Anteaters 4-3 in a tight first half, and the second half would feature more of the same, as Schuck turned away an early effort from Clara Samson but the defense held until a key moment in the closing minutes.
In the 79th minute, UC Irvine grabbed their best opportunity of the half, as Ariane Haysman Boaler was taken down in the box by Brooklyn Antonucci. Boaler took the PK herself, but Aurora Schuck was up to the task, saving the penalty and keeping the game square at 1-1.
Capitalizing on that momentum Long Beach State made a strong push late, as a shot from Antonucci was saved in the 85th, and Kailey Supa nearly scored on a run in behind just one minute later. Finally, a yellow card on Mirayah Villalpando created a dangerous set piece in the final seconds, but UC Irvine was able to clear the ball to maintain the draw.
The Beach has now opened Big West play with three unbeaten, and is unbeaten in six straight games dating back to the start of September. Long Beach State continues Big West play next week with a pair of road games, facing Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday night before closing the weekend at UC Davis on Sunday afternoon.
