12 points from Varick Lewis gave the Beach a spark from the bench, but hot shooting from the Tritons led UCSD to an 80-54 win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State took an early lead and battled through the first half, but UC San Diego pulled away at the end of the first 20 minutes and grabbed an 80-54 win over the Beach on Thursday night.
Thursday's contest was moved to the Goldmine on campus due to a facility issue in the Walter Pyramid, but a strong crowd of 1,478 embraced the vintage arena as Long Beach State (7-11, 3-3 Big West) took a quick 4-0 lead behind four Devin Askew points and trailed by just one through five minutes.
A 10-0 run from the Tritons helped UC San Diego (15-3, 5-1 Big West) take the lead and get their offense going. Kam Martin cut the lead to five at 15-10 with ten minutes to play in the first half, but a 14-2 run for UCSD pushed the lead to 17 on the way to a 38-23 halftime lead. The Tritons shot 60% in the first half and a season-high 57.7% overall, foiling Beach opportunities for a comeback.
Varick Lewis made his first four threes and finished with a career-high tying 12 points to give the Beach a spark off the bench, but Lewis would be the leading scorer for Long Beach State on the night. Devin Askew finished with 11 points and five assists, while Cam Denson had 10 points and four rebounds with solid production after being limited to just 18 minutes due to foul trouble.
Tyler McGhie led the Tritons with 26 points, while Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones added 18 for UC San Diego in their win to keep pace near the top of the league standings.
Long Beach State will continue their homestand with a home game against Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. on Saturday with coverage on ESPN+. Check back at www.longbeachstate.com for location details which will be announced as soon as they are made official.
