LONG BEACH, Calif. – TJ Wainwright scored a career-high 31 points, reaching the 30 point plateau for the second time in his career, but the stellar night was spoiled by hot shooting from Cal State Fullerton who rode a barrage for first-half 3-pointers to an 83-67 win over the Beach.
Playing in the Goldmine for the second consecutive game, it was Cal State Fullerton (6-14, 1-7 Big West) who immediately felt at home with incredible 3-point shooting. The Titans opened the game 5-for-5 from three on the way to shooting 71.4 percent in the first half from three.
Long Beach State (7-12, 3-4 Big West) started the game quickly by scoring the first two baskets, but the Titans hit their first two threes in a 1-0 run, and moved ahead 18-8 on an Antwan Robinson three with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Starting the game 9-of-11 from three helped the Titans increase their lead to 24-11.
Wainwright helped Long Beach State stop the push from the Titans, scoring 18 points in the first half to help keep the Cal State Fullerton edge at 11 at the break, 40-29. An 11-2 run for the Titans to start the second half put the game out of reach for Long Beach State.
Wainwright finished 10-of-16 overall with a trio of 3-pointers while making eight free throws to reach 31, bettering his previous career high by one point, set last season with Robert Morris. Devin Askew added 11 as Long Beach State's other double-figure scorer and Eli Djordjevic was the team's rebounding leader with seven, a new career high for the redshirt freshman.
Long Beach State will hit the road next week for two games, facing CSUN on Thursday night before playing at Cal Poly on Saturday.
