Career Night From Devin Askew Leads Long Beach State Past UC Davis

1/11/2025 4:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Askew scored a career-high 32 points as Long Beach State grabs a key road win.

DAVIS, Calif. – In front of friends and family, the Sacramento native Devin Askew had a career night, finishing with 32 points and 5 assists to lead Long Beach State to a gritty 84-73 win on the road at UC Davis.

Long Beach State (7-10, 3-2 Big West) once again shot over 50% as a team to help pace the way to the win with another strong offensive performance. The Beach were even better from distance, 11-for-17 from three, shooting 64.7% from behind the arc and 25-of-28 from the free throw line to grab a road win over UC Davis (9-8, 3-3 Big West).

Askew led the way in all of those areas, as the senior was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line, hit four three pointers and was 9-of-13 from the floor while adding five assists and four rebounds on the night.

The Aggies would grab a first half lead behind strong outside shooting of their own, as a pair of Connor Sevilla threes and a triple from Leo DeBruhl put UC Davis in front 19-14. Long Beach State answered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, and Long Beach State lead by one at the half, 32-31.

Pablo Tamba scored the first basket of the second half to give the Aggies the lead, but Cam Denson and Kam Martin answered with back-to-back threes to give the lead back to LBSU for good.

UC Davis would pull to within three at 52-49, but the Beach answered with a three from Askew and a dunk from Austin Johnson to push the lead back up to seven, and the Beach sank their free throws down the stretch to seal their second road win in three tries during Big West action.

TJ Wainwright scored 13 points off of the bench, Kam Martin added 12 and Austin Johnson scored 10 to round out the double-figure scorers. Cam Denson was the team's rebounding leader with seven boards, and Derrick Michael Xzavierro went 8-for-10 from the line with four rebounds and three blocks in an impressive performance that saw the sophomore finish with a plus/minus of +21.

The Beach will return to Long Beach for a pair of home games next week, hosting league leaders UC San Diego on Thursday and then rivals Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
